Abstract: Objective To observe the effect of diaphragm biofeedback training( DBT) combined with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) to treat gastroesophageal reflux (GER) related cough. Methods 11 patients with GER related cough were investigated. After completing questionnaire, they were taught how to practice DBT daily at home and record diary, meanwhile taking PPI (Rabeprazole 10mg, twice daily). We made follow-up every 2 weeks and asked them to complete health-related quality of life questionnaire (SF-36) at the end of the 8th week, and made a telephone call to them at the end of the 12th week. Results Total reflux symptom score(TRSS) and score of cough(SC) could be reduced by 50% after therapy of DBT combined with PPI. Symptoms remained stable in 8 weeks, and score of role limitations due to physical health, vitality, mental health, social function, body pain, general health increased significantly (P <0.05). At the end of the 12th week, symptoms remained stable while dosage of PPI decreased. Conclusions DBT combined with PPI can significantly improve patients' symptoms and quality of life in a short term, which brings forward a new therapeutic approach for patients of GER related cough.
