Application of Raman Spectroscopy in Identification of Recycled Polypropylene in Pharmaceutical Packaging Materials

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To establish a method for nondestructive identification of recycled polypropylene by Raman spectroscopy, in order to prevent the use of recycled polypropylene in drug packaging from harming human health. METHODS The samples were prepared by hot-pressed method, and the characteristic peaks of new and recycled materials were determined by Raman spectroscopy. The consistency model was established, and the peak height of characteristic peak was taken as the index for data analysis. The model was validated with samples containing recycled plastics to evaluate the accuracy of the consistency model. RESULTS The accuracy of the consistency model was up to 100% in the samples containing 16.7%-89.8% recycled plastics. CONCLUSION Raman spectroscopy is expected to be a nondestructive, economic and rapid method for the identification of polypropylene packaging materials. It has good social significance.
