OBJECTIVE To analyze and compare the components in the essential oils and flavones from Eucommia ulmoides Oliv and its leaves.METHODS Capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS) and chemometric algorithms were developed to analyze the essential oils. The relative contents of the identified components in the essential oils were obtained by normalization of peak areas. On the other hand, reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector(HPLC-DAD) and calibration curve method were presented to determine the contents of flavones in both Eucommia ulmoides Oliv and its leaves.RESULTS The 68 and 73 compounds from Eucommia ulmoides Oliv and its leaves had been identified, respectively. There were 33 mutual compounds among compounds whose total amount was 108.The total contents of the volatile components identified in Eucommia ulmoides Oliv and its leaves were accountted for 92.9% and 97.75% of the total contents of the relevant volatile oils, respectively. In addition, the Rutin,Quercetin and Kaempferol in both Eucommia ulmoides Oliv and its leaves were determined on a C18 reversed phase column using gradient elution with water and methanol and phosphoric acid(0.1%) and DAD detection at 362 nm.CONCLUSION There are significant differences in the components and the contents between Eucommia ulmoides Oliv and its leaves, therefore, the both officinal parts are of different officinal values for exploitation.
