Application of electronic prescriptions for narcotic drugs in quality control

Abstract: Objective To investigate the significance of electronic prescriptions on the management of narcotic drugs, so as to constantly optimize the management of narcotic drugs. Methods Continuous random checks were conducted on the prescriptions of narcotic drugs in operating room of the department of anesthesiology of Peking Union Medical College Hospital from March 2019 to December 2021. The changes of the error rate of narcotic drugs prescriptions before and after the electronic prescriptions of narcotic drugs were officially put into use were compared. Results The error rate of narcotic drugs prescriptions before and after electronic prescriptions were 31.5% and 8.0%[odds ratio (OR): 0.188, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.164-0.215, P<0.001]. Conclusions Electronic prescriptions of narcotic drugs may help to reduce the occurrence of error from manual prescription and has potential significance in optimizing the management of narcotic drugs.
