Abstract: Objective To explore the interpretation of 24h urinary protein. Method By combination of urine routine, urine sediment and urine protein electrophoresis, the results of 24h urinary protein in a type 2 diabetic mellitus (DM2) patient were analyzed in the condition with and without a catheter. Result There’s no association between 24h urinary protein and catheter indwelling. When 24h urinary protein was positive, urine electrophoresis showed the components of urine protein are complex and presentα2 macroglobulin suggested the source of urine protein from post-renal diseases. In the urine routine and urine sediment tests lots of bacteria, blood cells and white cells were detected, which implied the patients suffering with urinary infection and caused the false positive results of 24h urine protein. Conclusion When the results of 24 h urine protein were interpreted, clinicians should combine urine routine, urine sediment and urine protein electrophoresis to give a comprehensive judgement for the source of urine protein.
