Abstract

OBJECTIVE To investigate the absorption characteristics and mechanism of the total flavones of epimedium for various intestinal segments.METHODS The intestine in rats was cannulated for in situ recirculation.RESULTS Icariin was metabolized quickly in the four intestinal segments. The permeability coefficients(Peff) were(5.25±0.17),(4.27±0.28),(1.99±0.09) and(0.80±0.03) at duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon, respectively, and the permeability coefficients(Peff) of Icariin in the total flavones of epimedium were(3.65±0.18),(4.68±0.17),(1.64±0.08) and(0.58±0.26) at duodenum, jejunum, ileum and colon, respectively.CONCLUSION Some compositions of the total flavones of epimedium show metabolic transformation, and Icariin shows obviously metabolism.
