Abstract

OBJECTIVE To study the anti-inflammatory effects of 3,4-oxo-isopropylidene-shikimic acid (ISA).METHODS Auricle tumefaction induced by dimethylbenzene in mice, tumefaction in feet by carrageenan and granuloma induced by cotton ball implantation in rats were applied for anti-inflammation experiment. The contents of PGE2 and MDA in rat paw were measured.RESULTS ISA significantly reduced the degree of tumefaction in mice with auricle induced by dimethylbenzene, inhibited tumefaction in feet by carrageenan and decreased the weight of granuloma induced by cotton-pellet implantation in subcutananeouse part. In the carrageenan-induced model,ISA decreased the contents of PGE2 and MDA in rat paw. ISA significantly reduced the degree of tumefaction in auricle induced by dimethylbenzene in mice removed adrenal.CONCLUSION ISA has significant anti-inflammatory effect which may be related to inhibiting the production of prostaglandin E2 and protecting free radical against oxidation.
