OBJECTIVE To invesgate the demand for clinical pharmacist consultation in large general hospitals and analyze the role of medication consultation of clinical pharmacists in pain management. METHODS A total of 43 cases of pain management from the year of 2015 to 2017 were collected. The pain types and primary treatment information, distribution of departments, reasons for consultation, and pain management after consultation of clinical pharmacists were analyzed. RESULTS Patients with intractable pain, such as in a poor general condition, using a combination of many drugs, with a long illness course and having poor pain relief after the primary treatment, accounted for 76.7% of the 43 cases. Most of the consulted patients were elder and had poor compliance, and suffered from needle-like pain and burning pain. The most common consultation departments were the Department of Pain Management, Department of Endocrinology, and Department of Gastroenterology, which accounted for 70%, 16% and 7%, respectively. The main purpose of the clinicians asking for consultation was to assist in the adjustment of analgesic therapy. The average number of suggestions given by the specialist clinical pharmacists was 2.63 for each consultation and the average acceptance rate was 76%. Eighty-five percents of patients achieved obvious pain relief after the specialist clinical pharmacist consultation. CONCLUSION Medication consultation of clinical pharmacists specialized in pain management can help clinicians develop individualized analgesic therapy and improve pain relief rate for patients with intractable pain.
