Abstract�� OBJECTIVE To evaluate the quality of the flowers of Gentiana rigescens Franch. from different populations in order to explore whether the flowers can be used as a medicine as the roots. METHODS The contents of the active ingredients, ie, gentiopicroside, swertiamarin and sweroside, in the flowers of Gentiana rigescens Franch. were determined by HPLC. The HPLC fingerprint of the flowers were established and compared with that of the roots. The quality and quality equivalence were evaluated by One-way ANOVA, cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA). RESULTS The overall quality of the flowers of Gentiana rigescens Franch. from different populations in Dali Yunnan was good. The content of gentiopicroside in the sample from Gantong population was lower than those in the other populations, while it was close to the national standard. There was significant difference in the contents of gentiopicroside, swertiamarin, and sweroside in the flowers of Gentiana rigescens Franch from different populations (P<0.01). Quality equivalence of Gentiana rigescens Franch. from different populations was analyzed, and 15 common peaks in HPLC fingerprint were selected to evaluate the similarities of the crude drugs. The similarities of the common peaks were all above 0.809. Three characteristic peaks of gentiopicroside, swertiamarin and sweroside which were related to the activity of Gentiana rigescens Franch. were identified, and the quality of different populations was basically equivalent. The HPLC fingerprints of the flowers of Gentiana rigescens Franch. from different populations were compared with that of the roots. And 8 common peaks were selected to evaluate the similarities of the crude drugs. The similarity of the common peaks was all above 0.846 except to Gantong population. The total contents of gentiopicroside, swertiamarin and sweroside of Gentiana rigescens Franch. from different populations were similar as shown by cluster analysis and PCA of HPLC fingerprint. CONCLUSION The contents of active constituents of the flowers from Gentiana rigescens Franch.are already up to the national standard. But there are still some differences in HPLC fingerprints between the flower and roots, which indicates that the flowers not only contain the active ingredients the roots contain, but also contain many ingredients that do not exist in the roots. Therefore, to decide whether the flowers can replace the roots as a medicine, some pharmacological, toxicological and clinical experiments still need to be done.
