OBJECTIVE To investigate the biological properties of A. capillusveneris L. including in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial efficacy and diuretic efficacy. METHODS Double-fold dilution method was employed to observe the baceteriostatic action of the drug in vitro. Systemic Candida albicans infection model were established in mice to evaluate the protective effects of A. capillusveneris L. in terms of survival rate, splenic bacteriuria counts and renal pathological characteristics. The urinary effect of A. capillusveneris L. was studied in the rats loading with normal saline. RESULTS The water extracts of A. capillusveneris L. showed certain inbibitional effect on all tested bacterial species in the experiments. It prolonged the life of Systemic Candida albicans infection model mice, decreased the colony-forming units (CFU) of Candida albicans in the spleen and ameliorated the renal pathological characteristics. Moreover, it showed doubled effects on diuresis actions. The low dosage increased the urinary output, shorten the latent period of emiction, and the high dosage decreased the urinary output. The results showed that this drug effectively protected the infectious mice. CONCLUSION The water extracts of A. capillusveneris L. had in vitro and in vivo antimicrobial efficacy and diuretic efficacy, which provided strong pharmacologic proofs for its further treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI).
