OBJECTIVE To rapidly determine the concentrations of the trace elements in spirulina by flame atomic spectrometry.METHODS The boiling sample was dissolved in 50% nitric acid and a homogeneous emulsion was gained by adding emulsifier OP (i.e octyl polyethylene glycol phenyl ether) in order to emulsify nonsoluble fat.FAAS was used to determine iron and magnesium, and FAES was used to determine calcium and potassium.RESULTS The results of the working curve method were consistent with those obtained by digestion method. The relative error between them was less than 2.7%.The ttest showed that no difference was found between the two method.CONCLUSION It is possible to determine the sample of spirulina by emulsion sampling method. This method is simple, rapid and accurate
