Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the properties and chemical compositions of the polysaccharides from Sophora subprostrata. METH-
ODS The roots of Sophora subprostratawere extracted sequentially with boiling water,1molL-1NaOH,2.5 molL-1NaOH. The crude polysaccharide preparations were fractionated by anion exchange chromatography and gel permeation. The homogeneous polysaccharide fractions obtained were characterized by their physical properties and chemical compositions. RESULTS Eight homogeneous polysaccharides were iso-lated and purified, which were found to be amylopectin, amyloids, pectic, and hemicellulosic polysaccharides. CONCLUSION The soluble polysaccharides in the roots of Sophora subprostrata composed mainly of starch, and less amounts of pectic and hemicellulosic polysaccharides. The hemicellulosic polysaccharides here were xyloglucan and 4-O-methyl-glucuronosyl-arabinoxylan. Smallamount of arabinogalactoglucan was also isolated.
