OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of semi-synthetic high fat diet and synthetic high fat diet on glucose and lipid metabolism in Wistar rats. METHODS Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: control group (Con, n=7 fed with standard chow diet, high fat group 1 (HF1, n=7 fed with synthetic high fat diet, and high fat group 2 (HF2, n=7 fed with semi-synthetic high fat diet. Body weight, energy intake, and fasted serum lipid level (total triglyceride, TG and total cholesterol, TC of the rats were monitored. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT and insulin tolerance test (ITT were performed. RESULTS Weight gain in the first week, hyperlipidemia in the second week, and impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance in the fourth week were observed in the rats fed with semi-synthetic high fat diet or synthetic high fat diet compared with control group. CONCLUSION The rats fed with semi-synthetic high fat diet or synthetic high fat diet have the characteristics of abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism, such as obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia. Semi-synthetic high fat diet is superior in inducing abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism.
