Abstract:OBJECTIVE To explore the quality differences between roots and rhizomes of wild and cultivated Panax japonicus(P. japonicus), and to provide scientific evidence for the revision of P. japonicus quality standards. METHODS Twenty-one cultivated and 7 wild samples of root and rhizome of P. japonicus were collected. The difference as a measure of quality on morphological characteristics, alcohol extracts, HPLC fingerprints, and contents of ginsenoside Ro, chikusetsusaponin Ⅳ and Ⅳa as the three most prominent saponins in roots and rhizomes of wild and cultivated P. japonicus, were comparatively analyzed. RESULTS There were some differences between the wild and the cultivated P. japonicus in the morphological characteristics. Otherwise, there were no significant differences between rhizomes and roots on chemical fingerprints, alcohol extracts and contents of the three most prominent saponins in 15 samples with qualified contents of ginsenoside Ro and chikusetsusapoin IVa according to the prescription of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 Edition). CONCLUSION The present study provids scientific evidences for the quality study on roots and rhizomes of wild and cultivated P. japonicus.
