Abstract�� OBJECTIVE To study the rheological properties and the experimental phase behavior and microstructure of cubic liquid crystals formed from GMO/pure water�� simulate gastric fluid (SGF)�� and SGF (no enzyme) mixture. METHODS The Kinexus Ultra apparatus (UK�� Malvern Instruments) was employed to study the rheological properties of liquid crystals formed from GMO/SGF mixture. In addition�� the liquid crystals phase was detected with small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). RESULTS The rheological properties of cubic liquid crystals of GMO in deionized water�� SGF�� and SGF (no enzyme) indicated that the viscoelasticity values of liquid crystals are high. There was no significant effect on the rheological properties of cubic liquid crystals between GMO/water mixture and GMO/SGF mixture. Moreover�� SAXS RESULTS showed the type of liquid crystalline phase was Pn3m. CONCLUSION GMO may be used as potential bioadhesive material in gastric retention drug delivery system.
